SERIES - COLOR LANDSCAPES

André Derain, L’Estaque , 1905

A masterpiece of modern art, Rue de Murnau painted in 1908 by the man who is called "the inventor of abstraction": Wassily Kandinsky.

Joan Miró, “Characters attracted by the shapes of a mountain”, 1936.
Surrealism in all its splendor, with this almost frightening landscape despite the beauty of its colors.
Shortly after this painting, Miró began his series of “Constellations” which inspired André Breton for his hermetic poems collected in the collection “Constellations”.

A very rare work by Frank Auerbach.
Born in April 1931 in Berlin, in 1939 his Jewish parents, to avoid the situation in Germany, sent him to a school for refugees in Kent, England. This was the last contact he had with his parents, when he was 8 years old.
After the Second World War, he played in small roles in several London theaters. He became a British citizen in 1947 and took painting lessons at Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute and then St. Martin's School of Art.
He meets Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud who will paint his portrait. He is recognized in the art world, but faced with success, he finds it difficult to paint; in 2 years he only makes 10 drawings and no paintings.
Few Armenian painters, fortunately there is Arshile Gorky. "Water of the Flowery Mill", 1944
A painting by Thierry Lefort, 2020, a rare small format, 200 Road Hill , 40.5 x 50.5 cm. Oil on canvas.
Paul Sérusier, Ferme Jaune au Pouldu , 1890.
In 1888, Sérusier arrived in Pont-Aven in Brittany, a town popular with French and foreign artists. There, Sérusier's attention was attracted by a group of artists who crowded around Emile Bernand and Paul Gauguin. Gauguin encourages the young painter to free himself from the constraints of imitative painting, to use pure colors, not to hesitate to exaggerate his impressions and to give the painting its own decorative logic and symbolism.
Milton Avery, Autumn , 1944.
Milton Avery (1893 - 1965) was born in Sand Bank, New York. He studied at the Connecticut League of Art Students in Hartford, then worked at an insurance company until 1924. He moved to New York in 1925.
He has his first solo exhibition in 1928 in New York. Milton Avery's interest in French Fauvism and German Expressionism led him to develop a simplified formal language distinguished by clarity of lines and an expressive palette. His first drawings from the 1930s are close to the work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
Milton Avery interprets Matisse's decorative colored surfaces and paves the way for Mark Rothko's Color Field.
Prolific as a painter, graphic designer and ceramicist, Milton Avery received numerous awards from American art institutions before dying in 1965 although he only truly became famous posthumously. He is today recognized as one of the most influential American artists of the 20th century.
Maurice de Vlaminck, wild beast as a devil, The Red Trees , 1906.

Georges Braque, more wild than wild!
1901 for this painting by Wassily Kandinsky
August Mack , House in the Garden , 1914.
August Macke (1887 - 1914) was a leading member of the German Expressionist group "Der Blaue Reiter". He lived through a particularly innovative era for German art which saw the development of the main German expressionist movements as well as the arrival of successive avant-gardes which were forming in the rest of Europe, including Fauvism.
André Derain, Collioure , 1905
Patio in Capri by Gobatov.
Konstantin Ivanovich Gorbatov was born in 1876 in Stavropol in the Samara province. He studied in Saint Petersburg in 1904, then entered the architectural department of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Gorbatov receives a scholarship to study in Italy.
Gorbatov left Russia permanently in 1922 and settled in Capri, then in Berlin in 1926. Gorbatov's art became undesirable in Nazi Germany. As a Russian émigré, he was prohibited from leaving Germany during World War II.
Gorbatov died shortly after the Allied victory over Germany in May 1945. His wife committed suicide a month later.
Gorbatov bequeathed his works to the Leningrad Academy of Arts.
What a shame that Edvard Munch is known almost only for one work, "The Scream" from 1893, even though he is a pioneer of the expressionist movement and modern painting. Munch remains, for me, one of the creators of a new era. Munch's art from the 1890s is the best known, but I have a soft spot for these later paintings like " Elm Forest in Autumn " from 1919.
Louis Valtat, Spanish Landscape , 1894.
Born August 8, 1869 in Dieppe, Louis Valtat studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Académie Julian. His fellow students and contemporaries are Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard. He continued to paint until 1948, when he lost his sight. Valtat died on January 2, 1952 in Paris.
This painting is wonderful.
Joan Miró, “ Chapel of Sant Joan d’Horta ”, 1917.
it awakens both the eyes and the mind.
What is wonderful about Miró is that he has never been subject to influences or trends. He knows perfectly the history of art and his contemporaries, but remains free and creative. A work like this is the continuation of Nabis, Fauvism, Cubism, what a marvel.
Raoul Dufy, Landscape of Provence , 1905.
Pierre Bonnard, Le Cannet , 1930.
