Since the death of Ernest Hemingway in 1961, his house in Key West, Florida, has become a museum, the garden is a shelter for the descendants of his cats. There are still around sixty of them, including around thirty polydactyls that the Nobel Prize-winning writer was particularly fond of.

This passion for these 6 or 7-toed cats came to him after receiving a six-toed cat from the captain of a boat. In English, the word "Hemingway cat" has become a slang word for polydactyl cats.
