Aki Kuroda – Biography
Aki Kuroda, born in Kyoto in 1944, started painting at the age of three. As a child, he was fascinated by the surrealist magazine Minotaure, which his father received from Paris. He had his first exhibition at the age of 10. In his youth, Aki studied art history, traveled, lived in New York, then in Paris, where he settled permanently in 1970. His first solo exhibition took place in 1978 in Germany. Since then, his works have been regularly featured in major exhibitions: Doland Museum in Shanghai, Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo and Osaka, Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, Museum of Imperial City in Beijing, National Museum in Bratislava, Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin.
Aki Kuroda is intimately connected to the literary world. Marguerite Duras accompanied his first exhibition with an original text. From 1985 to 1994, with Yoyo Maeght and Didier Ottinger – now deputy director of the Centre Pompidou in Paris – he published Noise. In 2017, Éditions Gallimard gave him carte blanche to illustrate Hamlet by Shakespeare in a book featuring 50 original drawings.
Aki Kuroda freely develops his artistic research in painting, photography, sculpture, architecture, set design, decorations, installation, performance, and happening, all these expressions composing the immense project Cosmogarden.
