Louis Valtat, "Lily of the Valley and Hyacinth". A somewhat forgotten painter, 1869-1952.Louis Valtat (1869–1952) was a French painter often described as a quiet precursor to Fauvism. A friend of Bonnard, Vuillard, and Matisse, his palette blended vibrant colors, applied in flat washes or dynamic strokes, serving a generous, vibrant, often Mediterranean nature.
Valtat was one of the first to break from the dark tones of the late 19th century to bring forth painting that burst with life.
Born in Dieppe, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and then at the Académie Julian, he exhibited at the Indépendants as early as 1894. In 1900, he collaborated with the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, which helped disseminate his work. Valtat settled in Antheor, on the French Riviera, where he drew much of his inspiration.

Chagall's entire universe in one canvas: the bouquet, the floating couple, and that famous "blue air" that nourished his childhood dreams in Vitebsk. A rare case for him, the palette is restrained: blue, green, and white, as if he had put away his box of Slavic shards to let the bells speak.
Chagall (1887-1985) had met my grandfather, Aimé Maeght, in October 1947 at the opening of his retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. It was his daughter Ida who brought Aimé to the studio: dazzled, sixty American gouaches brought back to Paris and the beginning of a friendship that would last until the end.
First exhibition at the Galerie Maeght in March 1950. Grandpa loved to imitate his Russian accent. And I, as a girl, loved to hear that soft voice.
