The painter Tal Coat (1905-1985) exhibited his paintings for the first time at the Galerie Maeght, at the age of 49, in 1954. Abstract works mainly inspired by his native Brittany (his father was a fisherman).

In 1960, he showed his drawings from the Aix period (1947-1950), a region where, on various occasions, he meditated on the lesson of Cézanne.

He created the mosaic for the surrounding wall of the Maeght Foundation, a great success where we can see his sense of the material.

“Tal Coat is often at our house. All his life he was obsessed with finding new materials, new materials and mediums. He wants whites, absolutely pure and matte whites, in fact he went to Spain to study Velázquez's whites. » Said Aimé Maeght of his artist, of whom he published numerous series of engravings and who, in 1968, participated in the traveling exhibition across the United States “Painting in France”. Tal Coat often stays in Saint-Paul, his daughter, Pierrette, accompanies him.
